A.J. Burnett loses 17th game as Phillies fall to Padres, 5

San Diego - Who says this series is meaningless?

While Padres-Phillies will not have any impact on the postseason, it certainly could affect next June's draft, when teams are assigned picks in reverse order of finish.

The Phillies, who entered the series a half game better than the Padres, are now 1.5 games behind them after a 5-4 loss last night. While the Padres improved to 70-80, the Phillies fell to 69-82, tied with the White Sox for the ninth-worst record in the majors. The Phillies almost certainly will not 'catch' the Rangers (11.5 games worse heading into yesterday), the Rockies (9.5 games) or Diamondbacks (7.5 games) and are a longshot to catch the Twins (5.5 games), but heading into yesterday only 3.5 games separated them from the Red Sox, who were 3.5 games worse and currently have the fifth pick in the draft. On the flip side, the Phillies entered yesterday with only four games separating them from the 14th pick in the draft, currently owned by the Rays at 74-78.

The Phillies finished with the seventh-worst record in the majors last season, putting them in position to select LSU right-hander Aaron Nola with the No. 7 pick in the draft. In 2013, they had the No. 16 pick and used it to draft shortstop J.P. Crawford, who is currently the organization's top prospect and generally held as one of the Top 100 prospects in the game.

Jonathan Papelbon's suspension and fine were ...

Last night, A.J. Burnett picked up his 17th loss of the season, allowing 12 base runners, four via walk, and five runs in 5 2/3 innings. Domonic Brown hit his 10th home run of the season, and Ryan Howard committed a couple of miscues in the field that led to a Padres run.

Cory Spangenberg led off the game with a triple, then scored on a single by Wil Venable. A couple of fielding miscues by Howard then led to another run. First, he was unable to glove a pickoff throw from A.J. Burnett that ended up in shallow right field, allowing Venable to go from first to third (Burnett was charged with the error, but Howard clearly had a chance to make the catch). Then, he was unable to glove the throw from second on what should have been a 1-4-3 double play for the first two outs of the inning. Howard was charged an error on that play.

Brown hit his 10th home run of the season with two out in the second inning, sending the first pitch from Ian Kennedy into the right field seats.

Freddy Galvis gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, connecting on an 0-1 pitch off Kennedy for a two-run home run, his third homer of the season.

Alexi Amarista answered in the bottom of the sixth, getting just enough of a pitch down in the zone to pull it into the left field seats for a two-run home run that gave the Padres a 4-3 lead. Kennedy struck out seven and walked four in six innings, allowing three hits, two of them home runs.

The Padres tacked on another run on a pair of infield singles and an RBI base hit off the bat of Jedd Gyorko. Burnett allowed 12 base runners, five of whom scored, in 5 2/3 innings, including eight hits and four walks.

Cuban reliever Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez made his fourth appearance since his call-up, and his first since Thursday, retiring three of five hitters, allowing a single and a walk and recording a strikeout. Gonzalez has allowed at least one baserunner in all four of his outings.
