2nd Arrest of Adrian Peterson Is Sought After Test
Adrian Peterson, who was suspended by the Minnesota Vikings after being arrested on child abuse charges, could be arrested a second time for violating the terms of his bond.
In documents filed Thursday, prosecutors in Montgomery County, Tex., said Peterson had admitted during a urinalysis test that he 'smoked a little weed.' The prosecutors said that he should be arrested again and that his bond should be revoked.
The filing on Thursday was first reported by Fox 26 News.
A hearing on the request to arrest Peterson will not be heard until next week at the earliest because another hearing must first occur to decide whether Judge Kelly Case will be removed.
The recusal hearing will most likely occur next week.
In a statement, Rusty Hardin, Peterson's lawyer, said that 'the motion to revoke Mr. Peterson's bond will come up only when we know which judge will hear the case, and then the defense will respond.'
Until then, Peterson will remain free on a $15,000 bond.
On Wednesday, Peterson appeared at the courthouse in Conroe, Tex., and was prepared to plead not guilty to a felony child abuse charge. But the arraignment never occurred because Brett Ligon, the Montgomery County district attorney, filed a motion asking that Case recuse himself for colluding with Peterson's lawyers to speed up a trial date.
EXTENSION DENIED Anita B. Brody of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the judge overseeing a concussion settlement between the N.F.L. and about 5,000 retired players, denied a motion to extend the deadline for players to opt out. Several players had asked the judge to give them more time to decide if they wanted to accept the terms of the settlement, which provides cash awards for those with severe neurological conditions, because the benefits of the deal are still unclear. All retired players have until Tuesday to opt out of the deal, which would allow them to preserve the right to sue the league. The judge said players who objected to the deal could state their case at a hearing in November.
4 EAGLES MISS PRACTICE Four Philadelphia players missed practice, including wide receiver Brad Smith, who had surgery this week. The starting linebackers DeMeco Ryans (groin) and Mychal Kendricks (calf) and running back and kick returner Chris Polk (hamstring) sat out practice for the third straight day as the Eagles prepared for Sunday's game against the Giants. KAEPERNICK FINED San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick said he was fined $10,000 by the N.F.L. for wearing a pair of pink Beats by Dre headphones around his neck after Sunday's game. Kaepernick has an endorsement deal with Beats, but the league has a contract with Bose. 'I support breast cancer awareness! My grandma is a survivor!' Kaepernick wrote in a post on Twitter to explain his decision to wear the headphones. The $10,000 fine is more than the $8,286 fine the Broncos' Julius Thomas faces for a chop block on Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell. (AP)
TITANS' ROOS OUT Tennessee left tackle Michael Roos, who has played more games than any other offensive lineman since 2005, will have surgery on his right knee. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Roos would not play Sunday against Jacksonville, but he did not discuss details of the injury and would not say if Roos's season was over. Roos, who has played 148 games since being drafted in 2005, is in the final year of his contract. (AP)
JETS' DECKER LIMITED Jets wide receiver Eric Decker was limited at practice for the second straight day, but Coach Rex Ryan said he expected him to play against Denver on Sunday. Decker has a hamstring injury, but he participated in some drills Thursday. Linebacker David Harris sat out with a shoulder injury for the second straight day, and tight end Jeff Cumberland (illness) and safety Josh Bush (quadriceps) also did not practice. Wide receiver David Nelson (ankle), cornerback Darrin Walls (knee), center Nick Mangold (shoulder) and right guard Willie Colon (knee) were limited. (AP)
