CBS' 'Scorpion,' Fox's 'Gotham' Hold Up Well in Second Airings Monday
Two of Premiere Week's best-performing new shows - CBS' ' Scorpion' and Fox's ' Gotham ' - held up nicely in their second outings Monday, but it was NBC and its combo of 'The Voice' and 'The Blacklist' that finished on top in demos.
The night also saw solid season premieres for veteran dramas 'Castle' on ABC and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' on CBS, which as expected cut into the ratings for NBC's 'The Blacklist.'
ESPN will win the night with its 'Monday Night Football' matchup between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, which earned a 9.1 overnight household rating in Nielsen's metered markets. The game had the potential to rate higher - peaking with a 11.1 rating late in the second quarter - but the Chiefs opened up a surprisingly big lead and were never threatened the rest of the way.
Looking at Monday's entertainment programs, CBS' ' The Big Bang Theory ' opened with a big 4.7/15 in 18-49 and 16.2 million viewers overall to stand as the night's No. 1 entertainment series in 18-49, 25-54 and total viewers. It was down 13% (0.7) from its season premiere of the previous week; a year ago, it did a 5.2 in its second week on Thursday.
Following a repeat 'Big Bang' at 8:30 p.m. (3.1/9 in 18-49, 12.3 million viewers overall), the second episode of 'Scorpion' delivered a 3.0/8 in the demo and 13.2 million total viewers - finishing a bit ahead of 'The Blacklist' and 'Gotham' as Monday's top drama in 18-49.
It dropped off by just 6% from its premiere (3.2) even though its lead-in (last week's 'Big Bang' original) was 43% lower (3.1 vs. 5.4). In total viewers, the week-2 decline was a mere 4%. CBS made a move late last week to keep 'Big Bang' repeats in the timeslot for a few weeks, and it seemed to pay off.
In three-day DVR playback numbers for last week's premiere, 'Scorpion' rose 1.4 ratings points (44%) to a 4.6 in 18-49.
The Eye capped the night with the season premiere of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 9.4 million viewers overall), placing third among the dramas in the 10 o'clock hour. With a new lead-in and two dramas as competition (it had none last year on Tuesday), it fell off by about 35% from its year-ago season premiere (3.0), but it improved the time period over last year's 'Hostages.'
At Fox, 'Gotham' averaged a 2.8 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 and 7.3 million viewers overall - down 13% (0.4) in 18-49 from its premiere. Though 'Scorpion' held up better in its second week, Fox has to be pleased with the Batman prequel's showing on Monday, as the typical falloff for new shows is about 15%-20% in their second weeks.
In three-day DVR playback numbers for last week's premiere, 'Gotham' added 1.8 ratings points to hit a 5.0 in 18-49 and edge past NBC's 'The Blacklist' (4.9 in L+3) as the night's top drama in the demo.
Following 'Gotham' on Fox, 'Sleepy Hollow' had another soft showing (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall), down 15% from its week-ago season premiere (2.0) and more than 1 full point below where it was early in its first season a year ago.
NBC's 'The Voice' (3.9/11 in 18-49, 12.7 million viewers overall) matched its premiere rating, moving ahead of CBS' 'Big Bang'-'Scorpion' combo in 18-49 and 25-54. It was the night's No. 2 entertainment series in 18-49 and 25-54 (4.9/12).
At 10 p.m., 'The Blacklist' (2.8/8 in 18-49, 10.7 million viewers overall) was down 18% (0.6) from its season premiere but led its drama competitors in key demos. In its premiere, it grew 1.5 ratings points in Live+3 (to 4.9), so it could still emerge as the night's top drama in 18-49.
It's hard to get a read on the ABC numbers, because the net's stations in both Boston and Kansas City were airing NFL action. In the preliminary ratings (which include football), 'Dancing With the Stars' did a 1.9/8 in 18-49 and 12.7 million viewers overall (down from last week's 2.2). And at 10 p.m., 'Castle' did a 2.4/7 in the demo ans 11.3 million total viewers (it did a 2.2 with its premiere a year ago).
Next Monday will see the season premiere of CW's 'The Vampire Diaries,' with the net introducing 'Jane the Virgin' one week later.
Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 3.5/10; CBS, 2.9/8; Fox, 2.3/6; ABC, 2.1/6; CW, 0.3/1.
In total viewers: CBS, 12.3 million; ABC, 12.2 million; NBC, 12.0 million; Fox, 6.2 million; CW, 0.9 million.
