NBC, CBS win premiere week as Fox slips
Premiere week ratings are in: NBC and CBS have reasons to celebrate while Fox's numbers are far from utopian.
NBC led the first week of the 2014-15 broadcast season by a wide margin in the key adults 18-49 demo, while CBS was tops among total viewers. Though NBC's demo victory is more enviable from an advertiser perspective, CBS has the important bragging point of being the only network to show a gain among 18-49 compared to last fall - CBS was up 9 percent in the demo, while NBC, ABC and Fox were down between 3 and 9 percent each (chart below). Three of the four networks posted year over year gains among total viewers, however.
NBC was powered by Sunday Night Football, the return of The Voice and strong 10 p.m. dramas like The Blacklist. NBC has now won the fall premiere week three years in a row (guess how many years The Voice has aired in the fall?). Even critically trounced drama Mysteries of Laura did better than expected. On the soft side, NBC's veteran reality series The Biggest Loser is no longer pulling its weight.
CBS had victories from NFL coverage, double pumping The Big Bang Theory last week, and from new drama Scorpion.
ABC had a spectacular streak on Thursday thanks to its Shonda Rhimes-produced triple header. The return of Modern Family and Once Upon a Time also performed well. But ABC lacked the sports boost of its rivals, and its weak slots included the return of Revenge and new drama Forever.
As for Fox, its Animation Domination block had a big night on Sunday thanks to a crossover between The Simpsons and Family Guy, and new drama Gotham got off to a good start. But running struggling new reality show Utopia twice a week has created some Nielsen pits of despair, new hospital drama Red Band Society has underperformed and Tuesday comedies The Mindy Project and New Girl returned low.
