Jerod Mayo Suffered Season

The Patriots are limping into their Thursday night game against the Jets. Some players can't even limp.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo suffered a season-ending injury to his lower right leg, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

For the second straight year, Mayo will be placed on injured reserve following the team's sixth game of the season. Last year, his season ended with a torn pectoral muscle.

It was a seemingly innocuous play that ended his season. His right knee just bent awkwardly underneath him, and he went down in a heap — of course, while still making the tackle of Bills running back Anthony Dixon.

Mayo was set for another strong season for the Patriots, with 37 tackles (21 solo, 16 assists) and a sack. He was getting pressure frequently when the Patriots would send him on a blitz, with seven pressures (five hurries, one hit, one sack) on 35 rushes.

The Patriots are relatively thin at linebacker, but they do have some options.

Undrafted free-agent linebacker Deontae Skinner has picked up some of the workload early this season when the Patriots have dealt with injuries to Jamie Collins (thigh) and Dont'a Hightower (knee). Things will start to clear up when Hightower returns to the field; he has been inactive for the past two weeks.

For further options at linebacker, the Patriots also have Chris White on the roster, and Darius Fleming on the practice squad.

The Patriots dealt with a lot of attrition due to injuries last year, from Mayo to Vince Wilfork to Tommy Kelly to Sebastian Vollmer to Rob Gronkowski. With Mayo — as well as running back Stevan Ridley, who tore his ACL and MCL against the Bills — done for the year, the Patriots are already starting to feel the pain of some key injuries.
