Power Poll: Oregon, Auburn join this version of CFB playoff

Dear College Football Playoff selection committee:

First, hope you're caught up on your sleep. It's about to get real up in the Gaylord Texan this week.

That's the luxury resort where -- for the next six weeks -- you'll be responsible weekly for the present, future and credibility of college. No big deal.

None of us envy you, especially this week of the first poll. The Power Poll has made its humble decision on the top four. The top two are fairly easy -- Mississippi State and Florida State. After that all, you/we have to pick from for the other two playoff spots is 18 one-loss teams.

That's not including red-hot two-loss teams West Virginia and LSU.

We've got with Auburn at No. 3 and Oregon at No. 4. It's tough. The Tigers' only loss was a respectable effort at No. 1 Mississippi State. They has beaten two currently-ranked teams -- Kansas State (on the road) and LSU. Oregon has a win over a top 10 (Michigan State) and what has turned out to be a 'good' loss to Arizona. Its average margin of victory is 20 points.

These are the types of things you're going to have to consider in differentiating between ...

Ole Miss: The Rebels' loss to LSU is worse than Oregon's or Auburn's.

Alabama: The Tide have been hot lately but have beaten two ranked teams -- one almost two months ago, and Texas A&M when it was on its way out of the Top 25.

Those are this corner of the world's picks for now. At least we get compensated for our work. Your volunteer duties, dear committee members, are just starting.

Get some sleep.

My teams if the playoff started today: The remainder of the New Year's Six

7. Michigan State (6): Little Brother piled it on Michigan -- intentionally, on purpose. Jeremy Langford ran for 177 yards. A playoff elimination game is coming up next against Ohio State.

25. Clemson (24): Five in a row since the Florida State loss, giving up more than 17 only once and losing Deshaun Watson. One offensive touchdown for the second time in three games in beating Syracuse 16-6.
