Amazon Releases Diversity Report On Employees
On Friday, Amazon released a report detailing the demographics of its employees. The workforce seems to be dominated by the presence of white males. In a disclosure that mirrors other reports put out by other major companies like Google and Facebook, Amazon indicated a workforce who on a broader level was made up to 63% men and 37% women, and at the managerial level 75% men and 25% women. When looking at race statistics, the workforce is 60% white and 15% African American. Although the report did not detail where exactly the minorities were working, advocacy groups like the Rainbow PUSH Coalition have suggested that a high percentage of Black and Latino employees dominate in warehouse technical positions. Advocates have long insisted that technology companies have proven unwelcoming to women and minorities thanks to a culture that focuses on white males. This view is likely to be supported by the release of the Amazon report. Amazon has however said that they are putting in place measures to help make their workplaces more inclusive and promote the career development of women, Blacks and Latino employees. They also announced initiatives at local school levels to help pipeline a range of diverse talent for jobs in the technological industry. The statistics also indicate that the Asian population in the firm is almost at par with other tech companies like Twitter and Google. The Asians have been found to be overly represented as compared to other minorities. The company however does seem to be doing better overall on women and minorities when compared to Yahoo and Apple. This may be due to their bigger focus on sales and the operations of numerous warehouses
