'The Walking Dead' Boss Talks 'Unexpected' Mid

Is someone going to die in the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead? Again?!

That's the question on everyone's minds as we prepare to tune into the final new zombie-filled episode of 2014. The AMC thriller has truly raised the post-apocalyptic stakes in season five, and now all we can do is wait with bated breath to see if all our favorite characters will survive the hour.

ETonline had an exclusive chat with The Walking Dead's executive producer Gale Anne Hurd to get the inside scoop on what fans should expect from Sunday's 'completely unexpected' mid-season finale, Rick's ( Andrew Lincoln) emotionally digressive journey and more.

Although Sunday's mid-way wrap-up will feature all of the concurrent storylines of the season, Hurd revealed that the writers have thoroughly enjoyed being able to explore the stories of certain characters through their isolated episodes.

'That was something that we had hoped to do this season because last season we introduced so many new characters, and we really didn't get to spend all the time on then that we would've liked,' she said.

'It's just deeper and richer, especially when we're able to spend so much time in a particular episode,' the EP spilled. 'Filling in some of the blanks of these characters, and what will they do when they're pushed to the limit.'

Speaking of being pushed to the limits, we can all agree that Rick has turned a ruthless corner this season. 'I think that the world has provided disappointing time and again, and it has begun to affect him,' Hurd confessed.

'Every time there's hope, it seems to be shattered and he doesn't want any more surprises,' she said of Rick's emotional journey. 'He's someone who is probably further down that path of not trusting anyone then ever before.'

Now that we have reached the halfway point of Season 5, Hurd spilled that she is eagerly waiting to see the fans' reactions after Sunday's epic episode. 'I think I'm most excited by the fact that absolutely unexpected things are going to happen,' she revealed.

'But after sans events the fans are going to go, 'Oh my god I didn't see that coming!'' Hurd continued, 'It really will make sense once you see it. There is a lot that is completely unexpected and surprising.'

Sunday's episode, entitled 'Coda' - which actually means 'something that ends' - is sure to be an adrenaline-pumping hour. However, audiences should be wary because some of our most beloved characters have been killed in The Walking Dead's mid-season finales of the past.

Last season, fans cried out in devastation when sweet old Hershel ( Scott Wilson) was killed at the hands of The Governor ( David Morrissey) outside of the prison. The Governor also ultimately met his end in the same episode, but his death was not nearly as heartbreaking. And Sophia, Carol's daughter, also joined the list of The Walking Dead's mid-season casualties when she was apart of the Barnageddon Massacre of Season 2.

So should TWD fans have a box of tissues on hand before tuning in on Sunday? 'I would say yes,' Hurd advised. 'I would say that would be a healthy and wise investment.' Yikes!

The Walking Dead airs Sunday, Nov. 30 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
