She's back, but is she better than ever?

Katherine Heigl returned to TV tonight on NBC's State of Affairs as the strangely-named Charleston Tucker, a CIA analyst whose daily job is to brief the president (played by Alfre Woodard) on the state of the world.

To add to Tucker's already stressful job, she's still mourning the death of her fiancé, who also happened to be the President's son. In the pilot, it's been exactly one year since his death, and Tucker has to decide whether to chase after the terrorists who were responsible for his death or saving a doctor who has been abducted in Africa.

It's been a while since we've seen Heigl in a major role on TV, and she opened up to us recently about her past and what brought her back to the small screen, including this juicy new role.

'These men and women are so fascinating,' Heigl tells us, 'and the choice they made to do this, they get no glory and not a lot of money. The stakes are so high and they have to make incredibly hard gut decisions and then deliver that to the president. I like all of that.'

It's a pretty intense show that deals with a lot of hard issues, and then there are also lines like this, uttered when Charleston's therapist tells her that 'no good' is going to come of her promiscuity:

'Good doesn't have to come. I do, and I'm not going to apologize for that.'

You go, girl?
