Facebook Celebrates 500 Million Messenger App Users

Facebook just announced that they have reached a membership milestone: 500 million Facebook Messenger app users.

Mark Zuckerberg comments that messaging is 'one of the few things that people actually do more than social networking. In a lot of countries we'll see that maybe 85 percent of the people who are online will use Facebook, ut 90 percent or in some places 99 percent of people will use SMS or send text messages.'

He continues to describe their philosophy and strategy for moving messaging away from the native Facebook app to become a standalone. While it may have lagged or been confusing or even difficult at first, Zuckerberg thanks Facebook users for their loyalty and patience in contributing to the development of what has become a serious competitor in the mobile messaging industry.

Director of product management Petre Martinazzi, said:

'Messenger was the first of our stand-alone apps, and unlike our core Facebook apps, it focused on one use case-messaging. With Messenger, you can reach people instantly. It is just as fast as SMS, but gives you the ability to express yourself in ways that SMS can't. You can send stickers or videos, take selfies, chat with groups and make free calls. We've also continued to improve speed and reliability. Updates to Messenger ship every two weeks, so it continues to evolve and improve.'

Facebook acquired the help of PayPal president David Marcus to act as their vice president of messaging products. When Facebook's messaging app-Facebook Messenger-reached 500 million users, he issued a statement:

'I'm happy to announce that there are now 500 million of you using Messenger every month. It's an exciting milestone, but what's even more energizing is the opportunity to come to work every day to build the best way for half a billion of you-and many more to come-to stay in touch, communicate and express yourselves better with the people you care about most. There is still a lot for us to do, and we're looking forward to bringing more innovation and updates to you in the coming months.'
