Hunger Games: Mockingjay blitzes with SNL, poster, TV spots
The Hollywood hype machine is kicking into high gear for 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1,' which opens in theaters Friday.
The latest additions to the blockbuster mega-franchise's media blitz include two new TV spots, a new poster and a surprise appearance on 'Saturday Night Live.'
'Hunger Games' stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth crashed costar Woody Harrelson's 'SNL' opening monologue - a parody to Taylor Swift's hit single 'Blank Space' from her recent album '1989.'
Lawrence's co-stars used the opportunity to tease her about her tone-deaf singing voice, comparing it to the Internet-famous screeching goats.
The weekend also brought a new street art-inspired poster for 'Mockingjay - Part 1,' as well as two new TV spots (check them out below).
In 'The Hunger Games' films, Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, victor of the Hunger Games - an annual televised battle to the death in the future country of Panem. Katniss twice survived the horrors of the arena (in the box-office blockbusters 'The Hunger Games' and 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire') and in the third film becomes the figurehead for a resistance movement planning to overthrow Panem's oppressive government, helmed by President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
In one of new TV spots, a menacing, on-screen Snow warns Katniss, 'Miss Everdeen, it's the things we love most that destroy us.'
Katniss' mentor Haymitch (Harrelson) offers a warning of his own, about the captured Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson) - Katniss' arena partner and love interest.
'Peeta is the Capitol's weapon in the same way you're ours,' he tells Katniss.
The films are based on the bestselling young adult book trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The final film, 'Mockingjay - Part 2,' is slated for a Nov. 20, 2015 release. 'Catching Fire' director Francis Lawrence (no relation to Jennifer Lawrence) is directing both films.
