The Pittsburgh Penguins signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a four-year, $23 million extension Wednesday. Fleury's contract was due to expire at the end of the season and though he has been a lightning-rod for criticism, the team has been adamant about their desire to keep him.

'I believe in Marc-Andre Fleury, as the team does,' said Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford. 'He's won before and he will win again. We're very pleased to have him signed long-term.'

Fleury's new deal comes with a $5.75 million annual average, which represents about an annual increase in salary of $750,000 from his previous deal.

Fleury is a former first-overall pick of the Penguins and is off to one of the best starts of his career in 2014-15. He has a 7-2-0 record with a 1.89 goals-against average and .931 save percentage including three shutouts.

Over his career, Fleury has 540 NHL games under his belt, all with the Penguins. Over that span, he has compiled a 295-171-2 record, .911 save percentage and 2.61 goals-against average. He backstopped the team to the 2009 Stanley Cup title.

More to come.
