New England Tops Columbus to Advance to Conference Final

Lee Nguyen, Jose Goncalves and Teal Bunbury scored, and the host New England Revolution advanced to Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference final with a 3-1 victory Sunday over the Columbus Crew.

The second-seeded Revolution advanced by 7-3 on aggregate and will face the fourth-seeded Red Bulls for the conference championship. The first game of the two-game series will be played Nov. 23 at Red Bull Arena.

Nguyen opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, scoring on a pass from Bunbury.

Goncalves finished Charlie Davies's cross to double the lead in the 55th minute, and Bunbury capped the scoring with a left-footed kick in the 77th.

Tony Tchani scored a short-handed goal for the Crew, seeded third, in the 69th minute after Ethan Finlay left because of a red card in the 61st. Justin Meram was also disqualified for a second yellow card in the 85th.

ARSENAL AND TOTTENHAM FALL Arsenal and Tottenham slumped to 2-1 losses in the Premier League as their weaknesses were exposed, while Newcastle's resurgence continued with its fourth straight win.

After losing a 3-0 lead against Anderlecht in the Champions League last week, Arsenal allowed Swansea City to score twice in less than three minutes, which caused the team to drop out of the top four.

Forward Alexis Sánchez scored in his fourth straight league game to give Arsenal a lead in the 63rd minute, but Gylfi Sigurdsson scored on a free kick in the 75th minute to tie, and Bafetimbi Gomis secured the win for Swansea City barely 90 seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Tottenham Hotspur lost at home to Stoke City to fall to 12th place in the standings and increase the scrutiny on Manager Mauricio Pochettino.

'We need to improve quickly, because you never have a long time in football,' Pochettino said. 'My challenge in the next few weeks is to change the mentality.'That is something Alan Pardew has managed at Newcastle, which was winless until Oct. 18, but has advanced to eighth place in the standings.

Striker Ayoze Pérez scored for his third straight game to set Newcastle on its way to a 2-0 win at West Bromwich. Defender Fabricio Coloccino scored the second goal.
