NHL scores 2014: Red Wings crush Kings, Ducks edge Stars in OT

Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist had their way with L.A. Elsewhere, Johnny Hockey made more magic in Calgary.

The defending Stanley Cup champions can't be perfect every night and they sure weren't that on Friday. The Detroit Red Wings jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead and went on to beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-2.

Gustav Nyquist and Pavel Datsyuk each had two goals and an assist to lead the way. Tomas Tatar also scored and Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots to get the win. The Kings got a second period goal from Alec Martinez and a shorthanded goal from Tyler Toffoli in the third.

Kings captain Dustin Brown had the chance to make the game more interesting shortly after Toffoli's goal when he was taken down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. His attempt to cut the lead to 4-3 was stopped by his Olympic teammate Howard. Datsyuk's empty-net goal sealed it up for the win and helped them win one for Gordie Howe.

Elsewhere, the Toronto Maple Leafs overcame losing Joffrey Lupul for an indefinite length of time with a broken bone in his hand to beat the M.A.S.H. unit known as the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1.

The Ducks and Stars played the kind of game that made you think of their six-game playoff series and like that, the Ducks came away on top. Nate Thompson tipped a Corey Perry shot past Kari Lehtonen in overtime to give the Ducks a 2-1 win.

3 Things We Learned

1. Something was way off with the Kings tonight and it showed. They got blitzed by the Red Wings and couldn't do much of anything to contain Datsyuk or Nyquist. The Kings have always been prided on their defense and goaltending and they got neither of that on Friday. They've lost three in a row now and given up 11 goals total in that time and scored four of their own. Yes, they've got injuries but this stuff has to be driving Darryl Sutter crazy.

2. Johnny Gaudreau is 'Mr. Excitement' in Calgary and he's starting to find his way in the NHL. He had a goal in the third period of the Flames' win, beating Pekka Rinne at a narrow angle and up high. He also pulled off this move against Predators defenseman Anton Volchenkov that left jaws dropping. He finished with two points against the Predators and has six points in 11 games. Adjusting to the NHL from college hockey is hard, but Johnny Hockey is handling himself well.

3. Maybe David Clarkson is finally finding his way in Toronto. He scored his third goal of the season against Columbus on Friday in his 10th game of the season. He didn't score his third goal last season until his 26th game. Last season he was fighting uphill the whole time after dealing with suspensions and injuries. These things take time on occasion. Sometimes it takes a lot of time.

Impact Moment

How about this for an impact moment between Dallas' Jamie Benn and Anaheim's Corey Perry. There was no penalty and Perry was fine. (courtesy of @myregularface)

Stat of the Night

Even though the Predators lost to the Flames, James Neal scored his sixth goal of the season. That's the most goals scored in October in Predators history since Sergei Krivokrasov did it in the 1998-99 season. That was Nashville's first season in the NHL.
