Report: Dodgers to name Farhan Zaidi new GM this week
According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the Dodgers are set to name Athletics assistant general manager/director of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi their new GM later this week. He will be the first Muslim GM in American pro sports history.
Zaidi, 37, was instrumental in siging Yoenis Cespedes while with Oakland, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Zaidi attended MIT and is well-versed in the analytical side of baseball. This will be his first GM job.
'He's absolutely brilliant,' said A's GM Billy Beane to Slusser earlier this year. 'He has a great qualitative mind, but also a creative mind. The ability to look at things both micro and macro is unique, and Farhan could do whatever he wants to do, not just in this game, but in any sport or any business. I'm more worried about losing him to Apple or Google than I am to another team.'
The Dodgers will also hire Padres GM Josh Byrnes in an advisory role, reports Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles. The 44-year-old Byrnes was fired by the Padres in June. He had been their GM since 2011. Prior to that, Byrnes was the Diamondbacks GM from 2005-10. He's also worked for the Indians, Rockies and Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers named former Rays GM Andrew Friedman their new president of baseball operations last month. Former GM Ned Colletti has remained with the team as an advisor to team president Stan Kasten.
