Russell Martin Martin is signing with Blue Jays on five
Russell Martin is signing a five-year deal with the Blue Jays, sources have confirmed.
Martin's deal is for 'McCann money' according to Peter Gammons of MLB Network. Brian McCann signed a five-year, $84 million contract with the Yankees last offseason.
Toronto swooped in and swiped Martin from the Cubs, Dodgers and incumbent Pirates. Chicago, which has flexiibility and a need to improve its on-base percentage, looked like a favorite for days.
The Jays already had Dioner Navarro so they seemed like something of a long shot for Martin, who hit .290 last season with an eye-popping .402 on-base percentage in a career campaign.
The Jays have had trouble luring free agents in recent years due to the tax difference between Canada and the United States, but they really seemed to step out here. Martin is from Montreal, which is an extra attraction.
