Samsung boosts SSD caching technology with Proximal Data buy
Samsung has acquired Proximal Data, a US company that makes server side caching software for virtual machines running Hyper-V and other platforms.
The firm announced the deal this weekend, saying that Proximal Data will have an immediate impact on its business and on enterprise use of SSD storage.
San Diego-based Proximal Data claims to improve the way servers cope with incoming and outgoing intelligence, and to maximise the performance and caching of virtual machines by a factor of three.
'We are delighted to have Proximal Data join us, which will enable us to enhance our competence in SSD-based software for server systems,' said Bob Brennan, senior vice president of Samsung semiconductor memory research and development.
'With this acquisition, we will be able to further expand our SSD business in the server and data centre markets, while continuing to provide the most advanced SSD solutions to customers.'
Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, but Rory Bolt, chief executive and founder of Proximal Data, is keen on the move.
'Proximal Data sees tremendous value in being part of Samsung Electronics, the world leader in flash storage,' he said.
'We are excited at the opportunity to enhance our AutoCache, as well as to create revolutionary new products in enterprise storage, the potential of which will be greatly improved with access to the full capabilities of Samsung.'
This is not Samsung's first acquisition in this market, having bought SSD caching software firm Nvelo in 2012. The Nvelo kit made its way into Samsung's SSD technology in 2013 and has been in use ever since.
