Texans name Ryan Mallett new starting quarterback
The Houston Texans are putting their hopes in a new Ryan.
The team announced Wednesday that Ryan Mallett, who was acquired at the end of preseason from the New England Patriots, will replace Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback.
After losing four of their last five, the Texans need a spark to remain in the AFC playoff race.
'I might be wrong, but I think this might be the thing that helps our team,' said coach Bill O'Brien.
But they also need a long look at Mallett, New England's third-round draft pick in 2011, to see if they're interested in signing him beyond this season. If the free-agent-to-be doesn't impress, Houston will still have Fitzpatrick and rookie Tom Savage as options going into 2015.
