Toys 'R' Us Opening Thanksgiving at 5 PM
Richard Barry the Chief Merchandising Officer at the retailer said last year they received positive feedback from customers who had shopped on Thanksgiving at the store.
The toy store, which generated over $12.5 billion in sales during the most recent fiscal year, and a number of other larger retailers have progressively opened their businesses earlier each Thanksgiving to get the critical weekend of Black Friday started.
Many of the stores are open Thanksgiving as they try to grab a part of the spending by consumers in an attempt to compete better with their rivals online that are able to generate sales any time, any day.
A number of years ago, when retailers in brick and mortar stores realized they were starting to lose out on sales as consumers went online to shop following their turkey and fixings, they responded by opening on the holiday.
Kohl's and Macy's are amongst the retailers that already have announced earlier opening hours for the approaching holiday season.
For years, the toy retailer has been a participant in the famous Black Friday Creep.
Toys 'R' Us first opened on Thanksgiving in 2009 and through 2013 pushed its opening hours up each year.
However, this year they stayed the same as last, calling 5 p.m. the correct time for them to open their doors.
The toy retailer will have workers up front in the store to provide help with finding where items are located.
New express lanes will also be added to help speed the process of checking out for those with two items or fewer.
Barry said serving both types of clients was equally important so that is why they added the express lines for just two items.
Toys 'R' Us needs to have an excellent holiday shopping season as 40% of the annual sales at the retailer are generated during the last quarter of each year, which starts in November and runs through the end of January.
