2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible Takes Top Off for $49675

The 2014 4 Series Convertible arrives not long after its fixed-roof sibling, and for those who are looking to have the wind blow through their hair in the 3 Series-based convertible, the German automaker has pricing details. The 2014 4 Series Convertible will wear a $49,675 price tag (including destination) when it arrives at dealerships at the beginning of next year.

That price goes for the 2014 428i Convertible, which, like the Coupe, is motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 240 hp and 255 lb-ft. For more power, the 435i Convertible starts at $55,825, and benefits from a 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 that makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, however, the 428i will be available with optional all-wheel drive, while the 435i will initially be offered in rear-drive form only. The 428i Convertible is $850 more than the outgoing 328i Convertible, while the 435i is $800 more than its 335i equivalent.

So what exactly commands that premium? Although the 4 Series Convertible features the same three-piece retractable hardtop, it has new features and functionality. The convertible has been sound-proofed with a noise-absorbing headliner that BMW says has reduced wind noise by 2 dB compared to the outgoing 3 Series Convertible. Thanks to a new electro-hydraulic loading assistance system and wider access to the luggage compartment, more can be stuffed in the trunk regardless of whether the top is up or down. There's 7.8 cubic feet available in the 4 Series Convertible's trunk when the top is down, and when the top is up, that grows to 13.0 cubic feet, which is 0.7 cubic feet more than its predecessor. BMW says that large items like luggage and golf clubs can be stowed even when the top is down, thanks to flat-folding rear seats. All it takes is 20 seconds for the roof to open up for the sky, and it can be lowered at speeds up to 11 mph. BMW also says the standard windblock is smaller, lighter, easier to use, and can be stored behind the rear seat when not in use.

Also new are neck warmers included in the cold weather package. The temperature is automatically controlled in relation to outside temp and speed, and while this feature is a first for BMW, Mercedes-Benz did it first with AirScarf available on its drop-tops. Except for the retractable hard-top, the 4 Series Convertible is just like the Coupe, with Air Breather vents just behind the front wheels, as well as the sharply defined character line that stretches from the top of the front wheel wells to the L-shaped taillights. Three trims are available on the 4 Series Convertible: Luxury, Sport, and M Sport.

The 4 Series Convertible will go on sale in the U.S. early next year.
