FAU coach Carl Pelini resigns, caught for 'illegal drug use'

ESPN.com reported Wednesday that Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini has resigned, effective immediately.

The website said the school would not confirm the news. Florida Atlantic has scheduled a 4 p.m. ET news conference.

Florida Atlantic was off to a 2-6 start to the 2013 season following a 3-9 finish in 2012, Pelini's first year at the school.

The Owls (1-4 Conference USA) are coming off a 45-10 loss to Auburn and are hosting Tulane on Saturday. FAU has averaged 20.8 points per game this season, which ranks 105th in FBS.

The Owls suffered three losses that were by a combined five points in regulation. Pelini, who took over a program that finished 1-11 the season before he arrived, took over the program after serving as defensive coordinator at Nebraska under his younger brother Bo Pelini's staff.
