The First Trailer for 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones' Will Freak You Out ...

2013 marks the first time in four years that we haven't been anointed with a new film in the ' Paranormal Activity' franchise. The found footage horror series has shown surprising legs, grossing huge profits on very little investment, even while its central gag continues to be watching grainy footage of doors slowly opening on their own. In 2010, a Japanese spin-off, entitled 'Tokyo Night,' was released. But next year, the first official spin-off, 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,' will hit theaters, and now you can watch the spoooooooky trailer just in time for Halloween.

A 'cousin' (as the producers refer to the film) of the original series sounds kind of dopey and sad, but the trailer is surprisingly effective. What makes it work so well is setting the movie inside the Mexican neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a culture that is incredibly Catholic and extremely superstitious. (Also, their folk art is brilliantly evocative and eerie -- look at any Day of the Dead celebration.) Supposedly, the demon from the 'Paranormal Activity' is back, this time laying waste to an inner city Hispanic community.

While, at this point, I'd rather have an ant burrow underneath my skin than watch another found footage horror movie, I've got to admit that 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones' looks pretty awesome and disturbing. It opens on January 3, 2014, so what else am I going to do? Enjoy quality time with my family? Dream on!
