Yelp Overhauls iOS App, Adds Mobile Reviews to Android

Yelp just released what it calls its biggest update yet for iOS.

'The government shut down may have ground Washington to a halt, but it hasn't slowed down the Yelp Mobile team,' the company said in its update notes. 'We put aside our differences and reached across the aisle (separating our desks) to collaborate on what may be one of our biggest iPhone updates to date!'

Cheeky. So, what's changed in version 7.2? First up, the 'Home' interface found on previous versions of Yelp's app is no more. Loading up the app on iOS now takes one to the 'Nearby' tab by default.

Meanwhile, the bottom bar that previously consisted of 'Home, nearby, Bookmarks,' and other such shortcuts has been replaced by a simpler series of tap-friendly, boxed shortcuts that read 'Nearby, Search, About Me, and More.'

A new, larger 'center button' on the Yelp interface provides users with a series of three colorful buttons when tapped: one for checking into a given location, one for reviewing a location, and one for adding a photograph.

But that's not all. Yelp also did a bit of tweaking within the app itself. 'We also added tons of polish to our app, including larger notification photos, better scrolling performance, updated icons and animations, and a whole lot more,' Yelp said.

Yelp's last major update to the iOS version of its app hit in September, throwing a photo viewer and search filter into the mix. The former finally allowed Yelp users to see who had added said photos and, more importantly, who else had liked them, whereas the latter helped streamline users' finding of new places to dine, hang out, or whatever else one does during a night on the town.

For Android users, Yelp now allows them to officially post reviews of locations directly from their phones, a feature added to iOS in August. That's a far easier process than, say, checking into a location on Yelp, writing a note on your hand to remember to review it later, and pulling up your desktop or laptop after the fact to share your thoughts.

Users can also post pictures of the location (or their experience) to accompany their Yelp reviews. Just don't do it at the table, alright? Manners!
