Apple Rolls Out Guided iBeacon Support in 254 US Retail Stores

Next time you step foot inside an Apple retail store with your iPhone, you may not even need to summon an employee for help -- the company's own Apple Store app will now be your guide.newsandtalking.blogspot.com today reported that Apple Inc. is now implementing iBeacon at 254 retail stores across the United States, which use Bluetooth technology to guide shoppers with the Apple Store app on their device around the physical store.Earlier this week, Apple demonstrated how the feature works at its Fifth Avenue location in New York City. Examples include the Apple Store app notifying you when an order is ready to pickup and even an iPhone display quietly checking your upgrade eligibility as you walk by, followed by an offer to trade in your current device for the latest model.Of course, iBeacon won't work unless you explicitly give Apple permission to be tracked. Cupertino's technology 'can be adjusted to specific distances,' making some notifications available only when shoppers are standing in a specific aisle or product area. The Apple Store app will also switch to 'in-store mode' when the user steps into a brick-and-mortar store, a neat trick already in use by other retailers such as Walmart. The popular Shopkick app also uses the same technology to serve up discounts while visiting retail stores. An Apple spokesperson claims iBeacon empowers apps with 'a whole new level of micro-location awareness, such as trail markers in a park, exhibits in a museum, or product displays in stores.'Follow this article's author, J.R.
