Job of Giants' Coughlin Is Safe on Day of Dismissals

Although it was hardly a surprise, Giants management Monday confirmed that Tom Coughlin would return as coach in 2014. John Mara, a team owner, and Jerry Reese, the general manager, expressed virtually unqualified support for Coughlin, who concluded his 10th N.F.L. season with the team Sunday with a 7-9 record.

Reese and Mara will meet with Coughlin in the next few days and perhaps extend his contract, which expires after the 2014 season. The Giants have typically not let a current coach enter the final year of his contract, something Mara conceded Monday. On the subject of how many years Coughlin, 67, would like to remain with the Giants, Mara said, 'I'm not sure he knows how long he wants to coach.'

Coughlin, who met with reporters before Reese and Mara did, reiterated that he wanted to coach and added, 'I'm still a young man at this.'

Coughlin, Reese and Mara each said that quarterback Eli Manning had a difficult season, but they spread blame for the Giants' troubles to other players as well. Mara said Manning was 'still the face of the franchise.'

But Mara added: 'I think our offense is broken right now and we need to fix that.'

Rebuilding the offensive line, Mara said, was his chief priority.
