Claptrap High Five: Telltale Announces 'Tales of the Borderlands'

Best go catch yourself a ride — and a brand new Borderlands game, while you're at it.

A new announcement from the Spike TV VGX awards, airing today, indicate that Telltale Games has officially gotten its hands on Gearbox Software's popular Borderlands franchise. To the delight of Borderlands and zombie fans alike, the company is planning to produce a new episodic video game based off the Borderlands universe.

The game, 'Tales of the Borderlands,' is expected to first appear in 2014. Sadly, that's about as much as we know about the title at this point; the trailer accompanying the announcement wasn't all that descriptive as to what gamers might expect to see in Telltale's title.

That said, Telltale does come to the series with a fair bit of popularity behind its own name. The company's magnum opus, The Walking Dead episodic video game (based on the zombie show of the same name), has racked up more than $40 million in total sales — at $5 per episode. Gamers have purchased more than 8.5 million episodes of the choose-your-own-adventure zombie adventure, reported the Wall Street Journal at the beginning of the year, and the game itself has racked up plenty of awards for its style and storytelling among some of the heavy-hitters in the tech press.

It's unclear whether Tales of the Borderlands will stick to PC exclusivity or, like the games it's based on, jump to consoles and tablets/smartphones as well. Judging by Telltale's success in dumping its games to as many platforms as it can get its hands on – and since mobile sales alone account for roughly one-fourth of the financial success of its Walking Dead series of games — we don't see why Telltale wouldn't adopt a similar approach for Tales of the Borderlands.

That said, Telltale titles have tended to hit the PC first before jumping ship, so it's possible that Tales of the Borderlands might see a wee bit of desktop exclusivity when first launched.

And, hey, a few bucks per month to get some more witticisms (and criticisms) from Borderlands 2 arch-nemesis Handsome Jack isn't that much of a burden... right?
