SAN FRANCISCO -- Microsoft expects to pick a successor to CEO Steve Ballmer by early next year.

'We're moving ahead well, and I expect we'll complete our work in the early part of 2014,' said board member John Thompson on Microsoft's blog.

Shares of Microsoft fell 0.8% to $36.59 in midday trading action.

The board at Microsoft says it has identified over 100 possible candidates to fill the role.

Microsoft announced Ballmer's plans for retirement in August, when the company said it would take up to a year to fill the top spot.
