The Oscar race for foreign films traditionally one of the hardest to predict, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just made that task a little easier this year. Nine foreign films have made it through an initial round of voting to make the Oscar shortlist in that category for 2013-2014, announced today (Dec. 20).
Six of the entries on the list were selected by a committee -- made up of several hundred Los Angeles-based Academy members -- that screened all 76 qualifying films. The remaining three shortlisted films were selected by the Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee.
The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:
Belgium, 'The Broken Circle Breakdown,' Felix van Groeningen, director; Bosnia and Herzegovina, 'An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker,' Danis Tanovic, director; Cambodia, 'The Missing Picture,' Rithy Panh, director; Denmark, 'The Hunt,' Thomas Vinterberg, director; Germany, 'Two Lives,' Georg Maas, director; Hong Kong, 'The Grandmaster,' Wong Kar-wai, director; Hungary, 'The Notebook,' Janos Szasz, director; Italy, 'The Great Beauty,' Paolo Sorrentino, director; Palestine, 'Omar,' Hany Abu-Assad, director.
The nine-film shortlist will be further narrowed to five final Oscar nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles.
The list of nominees in all Oscar categories will be announced Jan. 16. The 86 th annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a live ceremony on March 2, originating live from Hollywood and airing on ABC television.
