ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Von Miller was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his left knee Monday and will miss the remainder of the season, a person familiar with the injury told USA TODAY Sports.

The person request anonymity because the injury has not been officially announced.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: How the AFC looks going into Week 17

Miller, who has five sacks in nine games this season and 35 in 40 career games, served a six-game suspension to open the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The Broncos went 6-0 in those games, but the defense has struggled throughout the season and ranks 22nd in scoring and yards against. Denver has already lost defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson (hip), free safety Rahim Moore (leg) and defensive end Derek Wolfe (illness). Moore is on short-term IR with a chance to return for AFC Championship game. Wolfe remains on active roster but hasn't practiced since being hospitalized on Nov. 29.

At 12-3, Denver has clinched the AFC West title and a first-round bye and can secure home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a victory Sunday vs. Oakland.

Miller suffered the injury in Sunday's game against the Houston Texans when his leg buckled while trying to fight off a block in the first quarter.
