Brit Awards 2014: Live

19.32 From the charisma-free to the charisma-laden: Lily Allen's on the red carpet, squawking with laughter and showing off her yellow hair-streak, which looks like a lemur's tail.

19.30 Bastille being interviewed now. The nice but a tad charisma-free London four-piece have, by stealth, become huge over the past year. They drew the biggest ever crowd to Glastonbury's John Peel Stage last summer and their album sold the most digital copies of any British act last year. I KNOW. I'm not sure how this happened either.

19.25 Ah, here's Keith Lemon. Well this is ITV2, it's probably a contractual obligation. Half an hour until showtime. We can get through this together, people.

19.20 A Mastercard ident there. Which reminds me, have you seen this inter-media bitching kerfuffle about Mastercard offering free tickets to journalists on the condition that they tweet Mastercard-related 'content' and 'approved hashtags'? Hacks are indignant about it. Anyone else is, I imagine, supremely unbothered. Who knew the music industry's wheels were lubricated with freebies and PR? Oh. Everyone.

19.15 Well, this is as painfully naff as most red carpet shows. People you barely recognise conducting awkward interviews under umbrellas. At least it makes us look forward to the main event more, I guess.

19.11 Laura Whitmore and Katy B discussing Pharrell Williams and Tinie Tempah's skin at the moment. Welcome to the Dermalogical Appreciation Awards 2014.

19.04 And the red carpet show on ITV2 is go. Blimey, the Brits is a star-studded affair this year... Oh, that's just a montage of previous ceremonies. And we cut to Laura Whitmore interviewing Conor Maynard. That brought us crashing back down to earth in a cloud of C-list mediocrity.

18.56 While we wait for the red carpet coverage to kick off on ITV2, there's the tail-end of some dreadful affair called Dinner Date, which is in no way a Come Dine With Me rip-off. Lord no, perish the very thought.

18.50 Good evening everyone and welcome to the business end of tonight's Brits liveblog. I'm Michael Hogan and I'll be accompanying you though tonight's gongs, songs, slight pongs and really very wrongs. It's showtime on ITV at 8pm, but there's build-up and aftermath on ITV2, if you can bear to visit the channel that brought us TOWIE and Keith Lemon. Please join me and join in too. Email your thoughts to michael.hogan@telegraph.co.uk, leave comments at the bottom of this blog or tweet@michaelhogan. I'll try to keep and see on them and report the highlights. Let's do this. Bring on the Brits.

17.50 The stars have started to arrive on the Brits red carpet and those who haven't have been getting Twitter all excited. So far, we can deduce that:

1. Californian girl band Haim are somewhere very dark...

...and potentially scary. They tweeted this picture with the caption: 'having a moment on the way to zee brits'. Slightly ominous.

2. Bruno Mars thinks Jeremy Kyle could be in attendance...

The ITV chatshow host might be. But it's likely Mars will be disappointed.

15.30 Unlikely things happen at the Brits, but I don't think anybody saw this news update coming: Chris Wood, the drummer for four-times Brit nominee Bastille, is going to be a guest in the commentary box at his home football team Plymouth Argyle.

Wood told the BBC: 'Having grown up going to Argyle with my family since I was a young boy, I jumped at the chance to get involved with the team and the broadcasting legend that is Sir Gordon Sparks. This will be a dream come true.'

Who needs a Brit Award after that?!

14.50 So after weeks of rumours, Brits host James Corden has confirmed that will be performing at tonight's awards. Corden said on Radio 2 this morning: 'There's this weird thing with this year's Brits where I've been - more than any other year - told things I can't say. But I figure its the day,' he said, 'Beyoncé. B eyoncé is performing tonight. She's performing a track she has never ever performed live before. Ever.'

Exciting times. Beyoncé was rumoured to perform at the 2013 awards, so it's great that she will finally be turning up. It also looks like the Brits will be doing a Grammys - Nile Rodgers and Pharrell will be on stage to perform Daft Punk's Get Lucky.

14.00 With some of the world's biggest acts nominated and expected to attend, theBrit Awards 2014 should be a memorable evening. Michael Hogan will be here from 7pm tonight to guide you through ITV's coverage of proceedings, including the night's big winners and losers, as James Corden presents for a record fifth time.

There is a fresh, youthful feel to this year's nominations, with a number of new artists recognised, most notably electronic duo Disclosure and indie band Bastille, who have four nominations apiece.

David Bowie, 67, is flying the flag for the older generation with two nods: British Male Solo Artist and MasterCard British Album of the Year. This led to The Telegraph's Neil McCormick labelling the Brit Awards 2014 'Bowie versus the kids'. We shall discover who comes out on top in a matter of hours.

Looking forward to seeing you at 7pm. Tweet @michaelhogan and @telemusicnews with your views and we'll publish the best ones in the live blog.
