MediaTek unveils world's first 4G LTE octa core smartphone chip
Taipei, Feb. 11 (CNA) Taiwan's MediaTek Inc., the leading chip supplier for Chinese smartphones, announced Tuesday the world's first 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) octa core smartphone chip to target the mainstream market. The MT6595 chip incorporates four new Cortex-A17 processors and four Cortex-A7 processors licensed by British chip designer ARM Holdings Plc, enabling integrated and low-power hardware support for video recording and playback of ultra-high definition 4K2K images, the Hsinchu-based company said in a statement. The new platform will be commercially available in the first half of 2014, with terminal devices expected in the second half of the year, according to MediaTek.'MediaTek is focused on delivering a full range of 4G LTE platforms and the MT6595 will enable our customers to deliver premium products with advanced features to a growing market,' Jeffrey Ju, general manager of MediaTek's smartphone business unit, said in the statement.Noel Hurley, vice president and deputy general manager of ARM's product division, said MediaTek has 'a keen understanding of the smartphone market' and continues to identify innovative ways to bring a premium mobile experience to the masses. At a press briefing held Tuesday in Taiwan to announce ARM's energy-efficient Cortex-A17 processor, MediaTek Chief Technology Officer Kevin Jou said the MT6595 platform has a similar or better performance than other companies' high-end mobile chips, and will be sold at a relatively 'affordable' price. He declined to name its customers for the new platform, saying only that MediaTek's existing customers will be on the list.Asked about MediaTek's product roadmap for smartphone chips with 64-bit features typically found in personal computers, Jou declined to give a timeline, but noted that the company 'should be among the leading groups' for future announcements.According to estimates by ARM, the mainstream mobile phone market is forecast to increase by 500 million units annually from 2015, with the Cortex-A17 processor expected to become a key component in that growth.More than 50 billion ARM-based chips have been shipped globally to date, the British chip designer said, adding that its broadening processor family will enable its partners to further optimize product offerings of existing and new categories.
