Shaun White puts down top run so far in halfpipe
KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia -- Shaun White all but assured he would advance in the Olympics, putting down a score of 95.75 on his first run in qualification.
White's run included a 22-foot method and back-to-back double corks, giving him the highest score of the day thus far.
American Greg Bretz also advanced to the semifinal at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Tuesday.
Bretz's score of 71.75 on his first run was not enough to crack the top three, who automatically qualified to the finals later Tuesday night.
Qualifying first was 15-year-old Japanese rider Ayumu Hirano with a score of 92.25 on his first run, which included a double cork on his first hit. He was the only rider to score in the 90s in the first qualification heat.
Dominic Harington of Great Britain failed to advance. He said the pipe was tricky but that the best riders would be able to handle it.
If they finish 10 th or lower in their heat, they will be eliminated. The fourth through ninth-place riders advance to the 12-man semifinal. Six of those riders advance to the final.
