Ronda Rousey Looks to Do What Matt Hughes Couldn't With UFC Record ...
The UFC allowed bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (pictured) to take a 10-month hiatus after beating Liz Carmouche in her highly-publicized Octagon debut at UFC 157. After filming 'The Ultimate Fighter 18″ and a couple Hollywood movies, Rousey returned to submit Miesha Tate at UFC 168.
The UFC wasted no time in throwing their biggest mainstream star right back into the fire after December's win. On Saturday at UFC 170, Rousey will share a company record with UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes as the only UFC champs to attempt a 56-day turnaround between title defenses.
Hughes TKO'd BJ Penn at UFC 63, but was found himself on the business end of Georges St-Pierre's shin to lose his welterweight crown at UFC 65.
While Hughes wasn't able to handle the hectic schedule, Rousey believes the quick comeback will be to her advantage - especially since opponent Sara McMann hasn't been seen since beating Sheila Gaff 10 months ago.
'I think it's more of an advantage for me fighting 56 days after my last fight than Sara fighting 10 months after hers,' Rousey stated during Wednesday's UFC 170 media day. 'It's more of a problem that she's not fought in so long than I fought so recently.
'Me and my coaches have watched all of my past performances and I've always had my best showings when there's been a shorter turnaround. And I'm used to doing that in Judo, too. I would do the Europe Tour and I would have World Cup four weekends in a row.'
If she's victorious at UFC 170, Rousey won't be breaking the 56-day turnaround record after this bout. 'Rowdy' jumps into filming the 'Entourage' movie in mid-March.
Fast return or not, Rousey is a heavy 4.5-1 odds-on favorite to bump her record to a perfect 9-0 on Saturday.
