KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia -- American snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg claimed the first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics, winning the men's slopestyle event Saturday.
Kotsenburg beat Canadian Mark McMorris, who was favored to win gold despite suffering a broken rib, as slopestyle made its Olympic debut.
Staale Sandbech of Norway won silver and McMorris took the bronze.
