Facebook cleaning up News Feed so you get a change of spam

As far as we're concerned, Facebook and its recently announced cleanup of News Feed will just mean that we will get a change of spam. The social network may say it's tweaking the way we see stories in our feed, but a strong hunch tells us that many people did not like a feature it introduced in February this year.

But we wish Facebook would do something about its refreshed and crappy interface which puts so much emphasis in throwing advertisements at our eyeballs first. Waving that aside, the company had rolled out a change which meant that when a Page (say, Pepsi) tags another Page (McDonald's, for example), those who like/follow McDonald's may also see the post even if they don't like/follow Pepsi.

It can be annoying to people when they come across irrelevant posts from a Page they're not fans of just because the Page owner tagged a Page they follow/like. But Facebook hasn't mentioned this in its latest announcement. Instead, the company says it will reduce spam in News Feed by not favoring 'like-baiters' or those who explicitly ask folks to like, comment or share posts.

Pages or accounts which trick users into clicking on posts or photos which actually lead to links with ads or other kinds of spam will also be put through the filter. Apparently, the way people engage with such posts helps the company determine whether they're irrelevant or 'spammy.' Lastly, frequently re-posted or circulated content will also face the scythe.

Facebook has assured publishers who update their Pages with good quality content that they won't be troubled by the refresh and may actually see an incremental increase in News Feed distribution.
