Tigers release Alex Gonzalez

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers released Alex Gonzalez on Sunday.

Gonzalez was the club's Opening Day shortstop and drove in the winning run in the ninth inning against Kansas City.

The Tigers traded for Gonzalez last month in an attempt to fill a need at the position following the loss of Jose Iglesias to injury.

Gonzalez, 37, hit just .167 (5-for-30) in nine games with Detroit.

The Tigers filled the roster spot by purchasing the contract of infielder Danny Worth from Triple-A Toledo.

Three weeks into the season, the New York Mets are trying their third closer.

The Seattle Mariners recalled pitcher Brandon Maurer from Triple-A Tacoma and named him the starter for Sunday's series finale against the Miami Marlins.
