NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell collapsed while giving a speech to Konica Minolta employees in Lake Tahoe, Nevada on Thursday.

Prayers for Bill Russell, he just collapsed on stage while speaking to our company. #shocked

The 80-year-old Celtics legend has been a popular public speaker for company events due to his 'team-first' mentality he conveys.

Following the episode, which took place at the Hyatt Regency resort in Incline Village, he was placed on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital to recover.

A witness detailed the event to the Associated Press, via ESPN.com: Witness Michael Rooney told newsandtalking.blogspot.com that Russell was telling a story about Wilt Chamberlain to a roomful of Konica Minolta employees when he started to sway at the podium and then fell backward. Rooney says Russell seemed to be conscious as hotel personnel and first responders came to his aid. The meeting was cut short and attendees left.

Russell is in the process of recovery and will fly home on Friday.

UPDATE: Bill Russell collapsed while giving a speech in Lake Tahoe. #Celtics tell me he is doing OK and will likely fly out tonight #wcvb
