10 Observations from Day 16 of Texans camp
The Texans and Falcons were back on the practice fields on Thursday. They weren't in full pads but wore shells and helmets and still got plenty physical. Here are 10 observations: 1. Duane Brown was given a rest day on Thursday and it was a reminder of how much trouble the Texans will be in if he gets hurt this year. Brandon Brooks is still on the Non-Football Injury, so here was the starting offense line for some of today from left to right: Derek Newton, Ben Jones, Chris Myers, Xavier Su'a-Filo, Tyson Clabo. 2. Jadeveon Clowney didn't go against the Falcons on Thursday; the team is likely still managing him as he recovers from his sports hernia surgery. So former first-round pick Whitney Mercilus got first-team snaps and looked re-energized. He had his best day in some time, even getting a sack during the team portion. 3. Arian Foster, Brian Cushing and Andre Johnson haven't been ruled out for Saturday and all three practiced Thursday. Foster, however, was the only one who went against the Falcons during practice. And he looked pretty good. 4. Undrafted rookie Marcus Williams, fresh off his best day of camp, made a nice play against Atlanta receiver Freddie Martino in 1-on-1s. Williams lost the receiver and didn't have time to turn his head so he did the next best thing. He watched Martino's eyes and put his arms up at the right time to knock the ball away. 5. J.J. Watt put an unbelievable swim move on Jake Matthews on Thursday. The Falcons' rookie offensive tackle from Texas A&M looked really good outside of that one play but Watt taught him a thing or two over these couple of days. 6. Rookie sixth-rounder Jeoffrey Pagan had perhaps his best play of camp, getting into the Atlanta backfield to blow up a play in 9-on-7 but hurt himself in the process. It was his last play of the day and got ice put on his left shoulder. 7. Ryan Fitzpatrick had another up-and-down day but had one horrible sequence in situational work. He threw three straight passes that didn't touch a receiver and his fourth was too high for Keshawn Martin. 8. Case Keenum got some work in with the first team for the first time this summer. He moved the offense down the field in a two minute drill and won the 'game' by throwing a touchdown to Garrett Graham. It was probably the best he's looked all camp but head coach Bill O'Brien said Keenum won't get first-team reps in the game on Saturday. 9. A little scuffle on Thursday. After Desmond Trufant broke up a pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins, the corner gave a long stare down and exchanged some words. Then Hopkins and Josh Wilson got into a little shoving match. Hopkins shoved Wilson in the facemask and Wilson retaliated. 10. The Texans had two big interceptions on Thursday. One was from A.J. Bouye, who continues to have a very solid camp. The other came from Kareem Jackson while playing in the slot. Jackson picked off Matt Ryan during situational work and the crowd went crazy.
