Protests at Houston abortion clinics after federal judge decision

There were protests at Houston abortion clinics today now that a federal judge has handed down a ruling that keeps many Texas clinics open that would have faced closure on Monday.

'Houston Women's Clinic is one of the busiest abortion clinics here in our nation,' said protestor and pro-life missionary Christina, who asked that her last name not be used. 'We've even heard reports that it may be the fourth busiest abortion clinic in our nation.'

Representatives of The Houston Women's Clinic declined interviews today. The facility faced closure on Monday, September 1st.

That's when the state's new law set a deadline for abortion facilities in Texas to have hospital level surgical centers or shut down.

At Planned Parenthood there was a much quieter protest. Their facility on the Gulf Freeway did not face shut down because it has a surgical center.

Critics successfully argued that shutting down some clinics would deny access to women in certain parts of the state.

This issue has always been a hot political topic.

Texas' new anti-abortion law was championed and signed by Governor Rick Perry.

The state's attorney general and the Republican who hopes to be the next governor, Greg Abbott, has vowed to appeal this latest ruling.

The issue catapulted democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis into the national spotlight and into the governor's race when she used a filibuster--while wearing running shoes--to try to stop the new anti-abortion law.

A spokeswoman with Planned Parenthood today issued a statement saying, 'We applaud' the federal judge's ruling but we understand the fight 'is not over.'

Anti-abortion protestors couldn't agree more.

'We've been out here for two years so we're not going to be deterred. We're gonna' keep fighting,' said Caleb Head, a pro-life missionary.
