Roundup: Angels top Lester, A's

Jered Weaver outpitched Jon Lester, Albert Pujols hit his 516th career homer, and the Angels beat Oakland, 4-0, Friday night in Anaheim, Calif.

The Angels extended their AL West lead over the A's to three games. The teams have the two best records in the majors.

Chris Iannetta hit a two-run shot despite a valiant effort by center fielder Coco Crisp for a 2-0 lead in the fifth.

Weaver (15-7) threw three-hit ball for seven innings, striking out three and walking three. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth by retiring Josh Reddick on a fly ball. Weaver is 8-1 over his last 14 starts.

Jon Lester (13-9) gave up two earned runs in six innings. He is 0-2 in his last three starts after going 7-0 with a 1.46 ERA over his previous 11 outings.

Tigers 7, White Sox 1 - Justin Verlander turned in one of his most effective outings this year and once again beat host Chicago.

The Tigers won for the fifth time in six games, cutting Kansas City's lead in the AL Central to a half-game. Chicago has lost 9 of 10.

Verlander (12-11) beat the White Sox for the 14th time in 18 decisions since June 10, 2009.

The former AL MVP allowed one run and nine hits in seven innings. It was the first time this year that he allowed fewer than two runs in a game. Verlander matched his season high with eight strikeouts and walked two.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 2 - Jorge Soler hit two homers and fellow rookie Javier Baez had a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning off reliever Pat Neshek as Chicago won in St. Louis.

The Cardinals lost in the return of star catcher Yadier Molina. He had been out since July 9 because of a torn ligament in his right thumb, and went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.
