2 Damon Dash files $25 million suit against Lee Daniels
Damon Dash, the music mogul who blew through a $50 million fortune and is reported to be deeply in debt, is suing Hollywood director Lee Daniels for $25 million.
In Manhattan Supreme Court papers filed Thursday, Dash says Daniels owes him money and executive producer credits on at least half a dozen movies and television projects including 'The Butler,' 'Precious,' and 'The Paperboy.'
Although Dash did get producer credit on some of the early films, like the 2004 film 'The Woodsman' starring Kevin Bacon and the 2005 crime thriller 'Shadowboxer' starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Helen Mirren, he says he was not compensated for the work.
Dash's name is missing entirely from the roster of producers in the later films.
In an interview published last week on HipHopdx.com, Dash complained that Daniels not only cheated him on money but also refused to let him say how the film should be promoted for fear it would detract attention from Daniels.
'I was funding my own movies. So I funded 'The Woodsman' for Lee Daniels. ... He swore to God I was gonna get my money back. ... The movie ended up costing like $12 million. And I had no say in how it came out. They didn't want me as part of the perception of the marketing of it....And I ended up never getting my money back,' he told the website.
In addition to Daniels, Dash is also suing Simone Sheffield of Canyon Entertainment who was a producer of 'Shadowboxer.' He wants $1 million from her.
Daniels' publicist declined to comment.
Dash, who made a fortune after founding Roc-a-fella Records with Jay Z - and then selling his share to the rapper - has been the target of a series of lawsuits in recent years for not paying his bills, including one from a woman who rented her Putnam County home to Dash for a year.
He also owes $50,000 to a former girlfriend, Linda Williams, who sued him for filing a false charge with police and getting her arrested after they fought over the care of the their teenage son.
