Bartolo Colon scratched from today's start, Carlos Torres to start

The veteran right-hander will miss today's start for family matter.

Bartolo Colon will not take the mound today as the Mets go for the series win against the Cubs. He is on his way home to the Dominican Republic to see his mother, who is in critical condition. Colon's mother had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer back in April.

With the Las Vegas 51s playing in Omaha, Nebraska, the Mets were unable to call up a starter in time for today's matinee. Carlos Torres will make the emergency spot start. The rubber-armed Torres last pitched out of the bullpen yesterday, throwing nine pitches.

The Mets will place Colon on the bereavement list on Tuesday. With the bullpen potentially taxed from today's game, the Mets could look to activate Daisuke Matsuzaka from the disabled list to provide relief help. Rehabbing from elbow inflammation, Matsuzaka pitched six innings on Saturday for Double-A Binghamton.

As for Colon, we would like to wish him and his family all the best in this difficult time.
