Del Potro will miss US Open
White Plains, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Former champion Juan Martin Del Potro will miss the upcoming U.S. Open due to a wrist injury.
The 2009 winner from Argentina has seen his career derailed by a series of injuries and underwent surgery on his left wrist earlier this year.
Del Potro had hoped to return in time for the year's final Grand Slam event, but the 25-year-old is now likely done for 2014.
The 6-foot-6 world No. 11 first started to have problems when he had surgery on his right wrist in 2010.
'DelPo' hasn't played since late February in Dubai.
The 2014 U.S. Open will commence August 25 in New York.
For a 10th straight year, Maria Sharapova topped the Forbes list as the top-earning female athlete on the planet. And Iveta Melzer (nee Benesova) retired from professional tennis this week.
Past U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro pulled out of the year's last Grand Slam tournament Friday because he's still recovering from wrist surgery.
Julien Benneteau upset Australian Open champ Stan Wawrinka in the Western & Southern Open quarterfinals Friday.
