Emmy nominee Tom Smuts promotes bicycle awareness

Share with others:

Shadyside native Tom Smuts, a writer/producer on AMC's Emmy-nominated 'Mad Men,' will ride his bike to the prime-time Emmys Sunday with a group of other industry peers from his home in Santa Monica to the Nokia Center, site of the awards.

'The purpose of the ride is to promote cycling as a safe, healthy, environmentally responsible alternative to driving for most of the people some of the time,' he explained in an email this week. 'When 'Mad Men' got nominated, I decided that I would ride and then decided to see if I could turn it into an opportunity to advocate for bike lanes and biker awareness.'

Mr. Smuts said the Television Academy worked to accommodate bike riders to the Emmy ceremony. As producer, he is a nominee for Outstanding Drama Series.

Mr. Smuts said he has been riding to work three days a week in traffic-filled Los Angeles for years, beginning with his stint on CBS's Pittsburgh-set 'The Guardian.'

His work on 'Mad Men' has wrapped - the show is in post-production for its final batch of episodes that air on AMC next year - and he's moved on to become a supervising producer on 'Bosch,' an upcoming online series from Amazon Instant Video.
