Glenn Dorsey Signs Extension with 49ers: Latest Details, Analysis and Reaction

The offseason just got a lot better for Glenn Dorsey. The 29-year-old nose tackle signed a two-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced on Tuesday.
'Glenn is a true pro who has quickly become a valued contributor to our organization both on and off the field,' said Niners general manager Trent Baalke. 'He is a quick study and a very good football player that has earned this extension, and we look forward to his future contributions.'
As Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo tweeted out, the timing of the extension is somewhat odd:

Dorsey might miss the entirety of the 2014 season after tearing a biceps muscle. Dave Siebert, M.D., a sports medicine expert for Bleacher Report, wrote that Dorsey could possibly make a return late into the regular season, but that's only a best-case scenario:
While the phrase 'season-ending' surfaced shortly after the injury, a source of Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio mentions the tackle could return late in the season following a projected four-month recovery. Such a scenario indeed remains a possibility if the operation and rehab go well.
The 49ers' willingness to use the 'injured reserve with designation to return' tag may also come into play.
Despite this optimism, however, a biceps tendon tear represents a significant injury by any stretch of the imagination. For now, 49ers fans should be prepared to, at the very minimum, go the vast majority of the season without Dorsey.
Although the biceps injury hurts his value in the short term, Dorsey's performance last year was arguably deserving of an extension. Replacing the injured Ian Williams, he recorded 41 combined tackles and two sacks.
ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez believes that some of the money San Francisco saved with Colin Kaepernick's labyrinthine contract was in part used to bring in Dorsey. Gutierrez wonders if Alex Boone could be next in line:

The fact that the 49ers locked up Dorsey for two more years benefits both the club and the player. Dorsey receives some added security while the team ensures it will have a key piece in the coming years.
Dorsey's not the kind of player who will single-handedly win the 49ers the Super Bowl, but when he's healthy, he can provide depth and production in the interior of the defensive line.
