Google

The fact that the phrase 'Just Google it' makes complete sense to us suggests the success of Google Inc. ( GOOG) as a search engine. Besides reserving a place in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Google is also credited (read: blamed) by some researches for making our brains lazy, especially when it comes to remembering things. Google is now our collective go-to brain, which we consult every time we need an answer to a mindboggling question.

However, Google, which has a grand vision for its future, is not one to sit on its accomplishments. This can be judged by Google's constant efforts to make improvements to its services and also by the fact that Google is worried about the overuse of the word Google as it can lead the company 'down the path of becoming synonymous with search engine services and, accordingly, towards the genericization of a trademark.'

Google is the fastest loading page on the internet and also the most used page to check the internet connection. There are two reasons why the entire mankind is so hooked on to Google: innovation and attention to detail. Even after achieving unimaginable levels of success with Android OS, Chrome, Maps, and many other services, Google has maintained its focus on improving its search capabilities and for good measure since Google still earns almost 90% of its revenues from ads displayed to users. It is estimated that Google gets almost two million search queries every second, which translates into two million users on Google every second, which further translates into more or less two million ads being displayed every second.

As to how the company continues to remain relevant with users, the answer to this question was recently given by none other than Amit Singhal, Google's head of search. Singhal wrote an extensive post on Google+ in which he pointed out that the company made 'more than 890 improvements to Google Search last year alone.' This number, for a Google-sized company might seem insignificant to some people, but is actually quite huge since the number of improvements made to the search engine stood between 350 to 400 in 2009, with 550 changes made in 2010. Although the 890 'improvements' made during 2013 are search-specific, they also reflect improvements to user interface, autocomplete, Google Now, and many other search related services.
