Jobless claims fell 14000 last week to 289000

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 289,000.

The prior week's was revised up to 303,000 claims.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs. When employers keep their workers, it suggests potential income gains, active hiring and confidence that the economy is growing.

Employers added 209,000 jobs in July, the government reported last week, the sixth straight month of 200,000-plus employment increases - the longest such stretch since 1997.

The government also said the unemployment rate rose to 6.2% from 6.1%, as 329,000 Americans, including many who had given up their job searches, jumped back into the labor force.
