Robert Griffin III bruises thigh, says avoiding hits is a 'work in progress'

NFL

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a bruised thigh in Monday's preseason win against the Cleveland Browns and says he knows he needs to protect himself better.

Griffin was leveled several times when he left the pocket to run, including once near the Cleveland sideline. Griffin finished the game with 112 yards passing with an interception and also had four runs for 24 yards.

'It's something we have to continue to talk to him about - how important he is to this team and this franchise. When he gets out of the pocket, he needs to protect himself,' Redskins coach Jay Gruden said to the Associated Press.

Griffin says his bruised thigh is nothing serious and knows he needs to work on the way he slides when he is trying to fight for extra yards.

'So the fans have nothing to worry about there. I'll keep getting better at that, I promise you that,' Griffin said.
