SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers made a series of moves Thursday to bolster their tight end corps in advance of their Thanksgiving night game against Seattle.
Tight ends Garrett Celek and Asante Cleveland were added to the 53-man roster, and they'll serve as the support cast behind starter Vernon Davis. It's possible Vance McDonald (back) will miss a second straight game, so the 49ers needed more tight end depth.
To make room for Celek and Cleveland, the 49ers put tight end Derek Carrier (foot) on season-ending injured reserve and waived outside linebacker Chase Thomas.
Celek was on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list in the wake of back surgery shortly after he reported to training camp. He's in his third season, having caught six passes for 89 yards over the previous two seasons.
Cleveland, an undrafted rookie out of Miami, has spent most of this season on the practice squad, although he was called up for the 49ers' loss at Arizona, which Davis and McDonald missed with injuries.
Carrier had nine receptions for 105 yards and no touchdowns in 11 games. He had no receptions in five games last season.
