Adrian Peterson expected to agree to plea deal in child
Former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson is expected to agree to a plea deal for Class A misdemeanor assault in his child abuse case, according to multiple reports, but no official paperwork has been made public by the Montgomery County (Texas) clerk's office. It is not known when Peterson might be eligible to play in the NFL again.
'As we have stated previously, we will make a determination on his status after we have the facts,' NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an e-mail. 'He is on the commissioner-exempt list with pay until the criminal charges pending against him are adjudicated.'
Peterson, 29, was charged with injury to a child, a felony that carried a prison term between six months and two years, in Montgomery County (Texas), just outside Houston. He allegedly struck his four-year-old son with a tree branch, causing the boy's legs and buttocks to be bloodied and bruised. Peterson previously maintained that he was punishing his child in a manner applied to him when he was growing up in Palestine, Texas, and never intended to hurt his son.
The Minnesota Vikings placed Peterson on paid leave in September, and Peterson has now missed eight games since turning himself into authorities. He appeared in court once in Conroe, Texas, but entered a not guilty plea in paperwork privately.
Peterson's trial was tentatively scheduled to begin December 1. It is uncertain what punishment he might face from the NFL.
There was a prosecution motion to revoke Peterson's $15,000 bond for alleged marijuana use that has yet to be addressed in court.
